Here at Above and Beyond Wellness Center, we talk about the Central Nervous System quite often, as it is directly linked to your health and can be greatly impacted through chiropractic adjustment. As it is such a vital part of your body and its proper functioning directly impacts your health, we thought we would take this post to discuss how it works and just how it affects your health and wellness.
What is the Central Nervous System?
The basic unit of the Central Nervous System (CNS) is the neuron. Billions of neurons live within the brain and spine, which is the springboard for all other nervous system functions within your body. Starting at the brain, this system sends and receives signals that control your body’s functions through the spine. As a protection, the brain and spine are surrounded by bone, tissue, and cerebrospinal fluid.
How Does the Central Nervous System Affect Health?
The CNS is not only responsible for sending and receiving messages that govern your body’s functions, but it is also the main ‘highway’ for the rest of your system’s blood flow and messaging. Because normal blood flow is necessary for healthy, functioning organs, your CNS affects your overall health as the conduit for blood flow and messaging.
Why Having a Healthy Central Nervous System is Important
Since the CNS is the starting point for all of your other nervous system functions, blood flow, and messaging, its health is vital your health. When your spine is misaligned, not only can it cause discomfort and pain, but it can also throw off and inhibit the rest of your body’s functions. Having an adjusted spine means that all activity flowing through that column is traveling normally, without blockage or hold ups.
How to Keep a Healthy Central Nervous System
There are several things you can do to ensure that your CNS stays healthy and keeps the rest of your body functioning normally as well. One of the easiest things you can do is make sure you get a good night’s sleep, studies show that a perpetually tired brain starts to decrease its functionality over time. On that same note, mental exercises and brainteasers are also a great way to keep your brain in tip-top shape. A healthy and regular diet is another way to keep your CNS working, as it should be. We also suggest chiropractor care to ensure that every component of your CNS is properly aligned and able to operate at its best ability.
